Abstract

In light of the contemporary transformations of the political field and the mutations of communication spaces, this article examines populism not as a mere rhetorical strategy, but as a form of communicative rationality involved in the construction, circulation, and legitimization of political meaning. It aims to understand how political actors of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) mobilize discursive processes to construct the figure of the people, produce collective representations, and strengthen their political legitimacy.

Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative approach based on discourse analysis. The corpus consists of public speeches, media interventions, political statements, and official communications produced by UDPS actors, selected through purposive sampling over the period from 2019 to 2026. The analysis focuses on the discursive mechanisms involved in constructing the people/elite opposition, argumentative strategies, and symbolic mobilization processes.

The results show that populism operates as a structured communicative logic through which political actors produce meaning, establish symbolic proximity with citizens, and organize a particular representation of the political space. The study reveals that populist discourse is not only an instrument for gaining political power, but also a mechanism of mediation between rulers and citizens.

This research contributes to political communication studies by highlighting the central role of language in the construction of political identities, the legitimization of power, and the structuring of democratic debate in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
