Abstract
In today's rapidly changing and highly competitive business world, innovation has become a necessity for organizations to remain competitive. Leadership, particularly transformational leadership as conceptualized by Bass (1990), is at the heart of innovation in that it evokes a shared vision, encourages creativity, and enables employees to embrace change. Transformational leaders propel innovation by establishing a culture where employees are challenged to innovate and take educated risks, enabling organizations to change and thrive in new markets.
This narrative review of the literature synthesizes key conclusions from empirical and theoretical literature to examine the effect of transformational leadership on innovation. Guided by Bass's Transformational Leadership Theory (1990) and augmented by Bass and Avolio (1994) and Gumusluoglu and Ilsev (2009), this paper examines how intellectual stimulation, creativity, and continuous learning are critical within organizations by transformational leaders. Through an integration of theory and evidence, the present research offers valuable implications to the debate on leadership and innovation, producing actionable recommendations for organizations that wish to build a climate of sustainable innovation.
From a methodological standpoint, this study adopts a narrative (qualitative) literature review approach. The corpus mobilized comprises close to ninety academic references, included peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and seminal theoretical contributions on transformational leadership and organizational innovation, published mainly between 1978 and 2024, and identified through targeted searches in databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. The main conclusion drawn from this synthesis is that transformational leadership fosters innovation primarily by shaping the psychological and cultural conditions, building trust, intellectual stimulation, and psychological safety, that enable employees to generate and implement new ideas, although the strength of this effect remains contingent on organizational culture, structure, and context.
