Abstract

Abstract

This article examines hrig-the popular Moroccan term for irregular migration-as a paradoxical phenomenon: despite tighter European border controls, the externalization of migration policies, and the militarization of border spaces, the desire to leave persists among young Moroccans. Dominant security readings reduce hrig to fraud or risk, obscuring its existential, temporal, bodily, and subjective dimensions. The study aims to understand, through the narratives of those who experienced it, how hrig transforms perceptions of time, mobility, and subjectivity.

The research adopts an interpretivist and phenomenological qualitative paradigm. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted between 2023 and 2024 in Casablanca, Kélaa des Sraghna, Tanger, and remotely with young Moroccans aged 17–30, complemented by digital narratives from podcasts, YouTube, and Facebook. Inductive thematic analysis and triangulation identified four themes: motivations for departure; the bodily and psychic experience of crossing; the difficulty of return, producing an “existential non-place”; and the obsession with mobility and repeated attempts. The findings reveal a suspended temporality marked by waiting, failure, and uncertainty.

The study renews the reading of hrig by focusing on migrant subjectivity and unequal access to mobility. It calls for rethinking return support by integrating psychological, social, and identity dimensions, and for recognizing the “invisible suffering” of migrants. While not statistically generalizable, the findings offer transferability to other contexts of irregular migration.

Keywords: Hrig; irregular migration; Moroccan youth; subjectivity; suspended temporality; return; reintegration; phenomenology; borders; mobility.
